Craniosacral Therapy -- it's not just rubbing your "noggin."
What is craniosacral therapy and how can it help me?
Our cranium is similar to the earth in that just as the earth has plates within its crust that move, so does our cranium-- there are many bones in the cranium that also move. When the earth's plates move and collide, they create symptoms that could be volcanic eruptions, folded mountains, and earthquakes. Just like the earth when our cranial bones are jammed together, we too have symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, etc. As indicated before, cranial bones do move, but their range of motion is very small; it is not like the range of motion in your shoulder. The goal of craniosacral therapy is to find the areas within the the cranial sacral system that have tension and are jammed together. Through very gentle, but precise work, we relieve the tension from the craniosacral system and free the bones to their natural range of motion.
What are some things that can cause craniosacral problems? -- Birth trauma -- Falls (hitting head, spine, hips, and bottom) -- Car accidents -- Sports-related injuries (soccer headers, football tackles, contact martial arts, etc) -- Dental work, braces -- Tramatic brain and spinal cord injuries -- Spinal surgery
What are the symptoms that may indicate craniosacral dysfunction? -- Headaches/migraines -- TMJ dysfunction, jaw pain, grinding/clinching teeth -- Pain: head, neck, back, and hip -- Memory problems -- "Foggy head" or unclear thinking -- Difficulty focusing -- Pressure in whole head or pressure behind eyes -- Plugged ears/full ears -- Trigeminal neuralgia -- Tinnitus (ringing in ears) -- Central nervous system disorders -- Infant and child development problems: colic, sleep problems, sucking problems, irritability, motor problems, pain, and inconsolable crying, etc.
Craniosacral Therapy Craniosacral therapy encompasses the cranimum (skul), spine, sacrum, cerebral spinal fluid, and membranes. This very gentle, painless, and precise work, is very calming to the central nervous system creating a deep sense of relaxation. Craniosacral therapy can be done fully clothed.
